The Kyle Shepherd Trio will perform at The Atrium, Wits University on Saturday October 19 at 8pm.
Jazz E and fineART Music, in association with The Wits Theatre, are offering Gauteng audiences this rare opportunity to see one of South Africa’s most entrancing and forward-thinking Jazz trios live on stage (just a day before Shepherd embarks on a tour to Malaysia, India and Japan for a series of solo piano and trio concerts). The trio, featuring Shepherd on piano, Shane Cooper on double bass and Jonno Sweetman on drums, has enthralled audiences in South Africa, Switzerland and China.
Shepherd is steadily gaining an international reputation as one of South Africa’s most influential and inventive Jazz pianists and composers of his generation. In September, Shepherd performed his latest project ‘Xamissa, Place of Sweet Water’ at the Festival d’Automne à Paris (Paris Autumn Festival). ‘Xamissa’, which was commissioned by the festival, is a large-scale compositional work that, Shepherd says, “brings together the sounds and cultures of Cape Town by incorporating the Xhosa, Afrikaans and English languages – with the use of voice, piano, the Xaru, the ghoema drums and tenor saxophone.”
Shepherd, who has already released three critically-acclaimed South African Music Award-nominated albums, namely ‘fineART’, ‘A Portrait of Home’ and ‘South African History !X’, will launch his debut solo piano album, which was recorded in Japan in September 2012, in that country during October.
