Cableway celebrates record breaking year

The Table Mountain Cableway experienced a record breaking 855 000 visitors in the past financial year and has been presented with SANPark’s Cape Regional Business Partner of the Year Award.

Sabine Lehmann, Managing Director of the Table Mountain Cableway Company, attributed the record number of visitors to Table Mountain being inaugurated into the New 7 Wonders of Nature hall of fame on 2 December 2012 after a worldwide voting campaign.

“The accolade has generated enormous interest not only from international visitors, but also domestic travellers who have made use of the many special offers aimed at locals,” Lehmann said.

SANPark’s Cape Region General Manager Gary de Kock said the Cableway was a deserving winner of the SANPark’s Cape Regional Business Partner of the Year Award for the professional manner in which the enterprise is run.

“We chose Table Mountain Cableway as our Business Partner of the Year for their innovation in improving standards in environmental and tourism management. The Cableway is passionate about conserving Table Mountain’s biodiversity and over the years have set new levels in reducing their impact on mountain ecology, while managing in excess of 855 000 visitors per annum.”

The Cableway opened way back in 1929 and the previous highest number of annual visitors was recorded in 2007, which is South Africa’s biggest tourism year to date.
