Cableway closes for annual maintenance

Table Mountain Cableway will be closed for an extended period from Monday July 22 to Sunday August 25 to undergo annual maintenance in the skilled hands of seven experts who will fly in from Switzerland.
The Cableway is required to do annual maintenance to meet the highest global cableway standards set by the Swiss Governing Body for Cableways (BAV). However the usual two week closure has been extended to five weeks as the main DC (direct current) drive will be replaced by an AC (alternating current) drive. In addition the two carriages, the mechanism that moves the cable car up and down the track ropes, will undergo their 6 yearly overhaul, and the heel rope is being replaced.

Both cabins of the cable cars will be taken off the ropes and will be positioned at the lower station for the crews to examine and work on. This is the only time that both cable cars will be at the lower station at the same time. Additional maintenance taking place includes comprehensive hydraulic testing and general maintenance.
“This is an exceptionally busy time for the technical team – we will be working closely with our Swiss colleagues so as to ensure our high safety standards are maintained,” says Andries de Vries, Technical Manager of Table Mountain Cableway.

Visitors can take advantage of the Cableway specials that are on offer before and after the annual maintenance period.
These include a free return ticket for adults on their birthday on presentation of a South African ID; and the Kidz Season special that offers two children under 18 years a free return trip if they are accompanied by a full paying adult (valid over weekends, public and school holidays until October 31).

Should your birthday fall within this closure period, you are entitled to redeem your complimentary birthday ride up the Cableway one week before (until July 21) or one week after (August 26 to September 2) annual maintenance. Remember to bring your SA ID to claim your birthday ticket.
