The multi award-winning theatre collective, The Mechanicals, have set out over the past five years to present, to a general public, classics from the repertoire of world drama; allowing a new generation of theatre audiences the opportunity to engage with past master craftsmen.
This year they have taken things to the next level by focusing on the great Russian playwright, Anton Chekhov.
Chekhov is regarded as a master craftsman in detailing the domestic and human lives of his time through a curious-comic lens; allowing the themes to resonate, to remain pertinent and finally to impact on our contemporary lives.
This season celebrates this iconic dramatist’s work in Afrikaans (‘Die Kersieboord’ directed by Sandra Temmingh) and in English (‘The Bear’ and ‘The Proposal’ directed by Fleur du Cap Awards Lifetime Achievement winner Chris Weare). Bringing to the stage wonderful actors such as Oscar Petersen (‘Joe Barber’), Tinarie Van Wyk Loots (‘Amadeus’), Carel Nel (Fleur du Cap Best Actor winnner for ‘Die Rebellie van Lafras Verwey’), Wilhelm Van Der Walt, Nandi Horak, Roxanne Blaise, Sjaka September, Bianca Flanders and Marvin Beukes.
‘Die Kersieboord’ previews on July 24 and opens on July 26 . ‘The Bear’ and ‘The Proposal’ preview on July 25 and open on July 27. These productions will show on alternate nights Tuesday through Saturday at the Intimate Theatre at 8pm until September 6/7.
