Wine with heart: Overgaauw – four generations of excellence

Overgaauw is a fourth generation, family owned winery, situated in the beautiful Stellenbosch Kloof region of Stellenbosch.
The farm boasts more than a century of history, but still manages to stay on the cutting edge of modern day winemaking innovations and the estate is known for many “firsts” in the South African wine industry.
Did you know that the Overgaauw team was the first to launch a South African estate bottled Merlot, way back in 1982? They were also a joint first producer of South Africa’s first Bordeaux style blend and among the handful of pioneers to bottle Chardonnay. In 1971 Overgaauw started to make Sylvaner and to my knowledge they are still the only South African winery to do so. Sylvaner is an ancient white grape variety grown predominantly in Alsace and Germany. I love this medium bodied, aromatic wine and if you want to experiment with something different on the white wine front, this is the one.

The Sylvaner sells for R52 from the cellar door. Sylvaner pairs well with many of the dishes that go with a dry to off-dry Riesling, such as Japanese food, seafood and even some Korma style curries.
Overgaauw was also among the first to  mature Cabernet Sauvignon in French oak barrels in the early seventies and they were the maiden estate to plant Portuguese Port cultivars and to top it off, the first estate to replace the contentious name ‘Port’ on their labels in 1996.

Now at the helm, David Van Velden is the fourth-generation winemaker on the Estate. He studied at the University of Stellenbosch and David’s abundant energy and passion paired with the legacy of a century of winemaking at Overgaauw is the perfect combination to guarantee success. “Experience and some school fees helped me identify a clear view of what I would like to achieve,” says David.
“First and foremost is a continuous focus on expressing a sense of place in all our wines and increase the purity and cleanliness of fruit in our wines across the range. This is what our unique terroir deserves and I guess the three generations before me expect as well. I want to express fresh and cleaner Overgaauw fruit identity in the reds and mid palate fruit and balance in the white wines.”
This is certainly evident in the new Overgaauw red and white wine releases.
