Night & Day, Cape Town City Ballet’s sizzling tribute to songwriter Cole Porter, will performed at The Playhouse in Durban from July 4 to 7. The ballet pays homage to one of the 20th century’s most popular song writers in a production with toe-tapping numbers including elements of jazz, tap dancing and cabaret.
‘Night & Day’ aims to show off the ageless appeal of Cole Porter’s music through dance. Choreographers Robin Van Wyk, Mervyn Williams, Kirsten Isenberg, Paul Johnson and Nigel Lucas have complemented Porter’s sophisticated and whimsical melodies with their individual charm and characters.
The legendary American composer wrote some of the wittiest and most romantic songs ever composed. He dominated the musical scene from the 1930s to1950s and his music has continued to be popular through all decades, with top recording artists like Robbie Williams, Elvis Costello and Alanis Morisette, Frank Sinitra and Dionna Warwick performing his work.
‘Night & Day’ includes some of the most favourite Porter songs, like ‘Let’s Misbehave’, ‘Too Darn Hot’, ‘Let’s Fall in Love’ and ‘Anything Goes’. Performed to recorded music, with a live saxophone, Porters music comes alive on stage in a Paris nightclub, old world Venice, New York’s bright lights and Broadway’s glamour.
After successful runs in Cape Town and Johannesburg in 2012, Durban audiences now have the opportunity to catch this enchanting work for five performances only.
