The Winter Wonderland Carnival, taking place this weekend from Friday to Sunday, June 28 to 30, will be the highlight of Gordon’s Bay’s ‘Festival of Lights’ (22 June to 22 July). From the Opening Celebration at 6pm, Friday 28 June, the atmosphere will be alive with the sound of music as the picturesque seaside village is again transformed into a magnificent spectacle of white lights.
Visitors, families and party-lovers can look forward to almost all activities being free.
Dress up in winter woollies and carnival gear, don twinkling lights and stroll along the decorated beachfront to see the magical ‘Fairy Forest , ‘Lovers’ Bench’ and ‘Faerie Fair’ with carnival characters, fire dancers and stilt walkers and the Fairy Ferries boat rides (weather permitting). Snowflakes, light-encrusted yachts and snowmen, decorated shops, restaurants, trees and homes – all will sparkle with brilliant white LED lights to create a delightful carnival atmosphere.
Shriek with delight (or fear) at the Beachfront Fun Fair, the Fire Walking, Climb Crazy Wall and the Enchanted Ghost House. While buskers add music to the air, stop at stalls and restaurants for gluhwein, hot chocolate, warming winter fare or tantalizing ‘food on the go’. Dance at spontaneous ‘Pavement Parties’ at restaurants, the Music Fest Marquee and Beer tent or ‘Melt-stock’. Fun seekers can also look forward to art exhibitions, craft markets, exhibitions, choirs, the Praise fest and ‘Wine on the Waves’.
Gordon’s Bay is only 50 minutes from Cape Town, but for party-lovers many guest houses are offering special rates (Visit www.showmegordonsbay.co.za for more information.) Visitors can offer blankets and food for the needy at the INFO desk at the Marquee Village.
