Cape Town children to enjoy recreational activities throughout the school holiday

CITY OF CAPE TOWN

Parents need not worry about how to keep their children entertained during the upcoming school holidays. The City’s Sport, Recreation and Amenities Department and Library and Information Services Department will host a range of activities at community halls, sports facilities and libraries during the winter holidays. Library and Information Services

The City of Cape Town’s Library and Information Services Department will once again offer various activities at selected libraries during the June/July school holidays.

The majority of the programmes will focus on arts and crafts and safety over the holiday period. The programmes will also include games, reading programmes, DVD shows, face-painting, chess competitions and informative talks, amongst others.

Public libraries will be presenting these programmes in collaboration with the Molo Songololo, Blue Ribbon, Wally 107, the Sport, Recreation and Amenities Department and the Environmental Resource Management Department, amongst others.

Members of the public are encouraged to visit their public libraries in their communities for further details.

“It is important that the City’s libraries are places full of activity and learning, where children feel safe and welcome. We hope that our young people will spend more and more of their free time in libraries. Holiday programmes are a priority the City’s Library and Information Services Department and are part of our commitment to being a Caring City,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Special Projects, Alderman Belinda Walker.

Libraries can be contacted directly for more details about their programmes. Details of the holiday programmes can also be found on the City’s website at www.capetown.gov.za/library

Sport, Recreation and Amenities

The Sport, Recreation and Amenities Department has planned approximately 500 holiday events that will run daily from 24 June – 12 July 2013. The programme will be presented at the City’s various community centres, multi-purpose centres, sports fields and libraries.

“We take great pride in running a quality holiday programme. These events ensure that our sport and recreation facilities are enjoyed to their maximum and form part of our commitment to being a Caring and Inclusive City. They provide children with a fun-filled and active holiday, as well as opportunities for social interaction and community-building. The wide range of both indoor and outdoor activities planned for this coming holiday season will mean that there is something to spark everyone’s interest,” said Alderman Walker.

Each of the six districts within the Department will use the services of volunteers to ensure that all the events are effectively implemented. The goal is to encourage children from communities throughout the city to participate in sport, recreation and special events during the holiday period.

Indoor events that will be hosted at community centres include board games, gymnastics, rope-skipping, karate, pool, poetry and drama, concerts, indigenous games, cultural dances and fitness training, Hip-Hop dancing, sports and fitness activities, talent shows and arts and crafts.

Outdoor events include, five-a-side soccer, mini-netball, basketball, cricket, hockey, sport against crime, excursions, big walks, fun runs, jumping castle, face-painting, trampolining, touch rugby and various recreational activities and family fun festivals.

Members of the public are encouraged to visit the centres in their communities. Below is a list of the facilities and contact details where daily events will be hosted:
