Artscape will celebrate the 11th Youth Jazz Festival on Friday June 14 with seven talented young soloists who successfully auditioned to perform at the signature event. They are Brandon Ruiters (24) on Trumpet, Hanley-Marc Jumat (19) on Guitar, Jason Beukes (19) on Drums and Marcelle Adams (18) on Trumpet. The vocalists are Megan Herbert (19), Zoe Palesa Modiga (19) and Zolani Bongo (19). The performance will be at 7.30pm at the Artscape Theatre. Patronized by jazz lovers of all ages, the festival is sold out every year.
Multi-instrumentalist and educator Camillo Lombard is directing the festival and together with seasoned jazz musicians Kevin Gibson (Drums), Gorm Helfjord (Guitar) and Peter Ndlala (Bass Guitar) they will form a jazz ensemble to accompany the soloists.
In preparation of the festival each year, Artscape designs a challenging mentorship programme with a focus firmly on the development and education of young jazz aspirants. This year the jazz ensemble will mentor the instrumentalists and Melanie Scholtz the vocalists.
The Festival is collaborating with a learnership programme in Wellington at the Breytenbach Centre and St Albans Primary School for 2013. The organisation draws on youth from the Wellington and Mbekweni communities for a year’s course where learners will qualify with a National Certificate in Music Practice with skills and competencies in performance, theory and knowledge of the music industry in general. Zolani Bongo, soloist in this year’s Festival, is a recipient of this programme and comes from Mbekweni.
