When I moved to Cape Town, I fell in love with the many cycle lanes around the city and heading out of the city. The City of Cape Town is working to develop its bicycle infrastructure, and there are a growing number of safe cycling routes and places to ride in the city and surrounds.
So I started to explore the city on my road bicycle (a bicycle designed for competitive road cycling). I only recently got myself another bicycle, and it is something I haven’t been to familiar with – a single-speed bicycle. (This type of bicycle with a single gear ratio is the most basic type.) This is the ideal bike to cycle around the city with and explore all the great hidden gems.
I now cycle to work and meetings daily, making use of the cycle path on Somerset Road and even along the promenade. The weather has been amazing recently, but I do worry about the rainy days, so I have invested in a rain coat that I keep with me. Since I have started cycling to work, I have saved a lot on my monthly petrol bill. There isn’t a day that I am out on the roads and have felt unsafe. I love my rides around the city.
Now, if you are interested in an alternative mode of transport or wanting to get into cycling around the city, Open Streets Cape Town will launch its programme for an Open Streets network in Cape Town on Saturday May 25, to help connect different communities, encourage residents to use alternative and environmentally sustainable modes of transport, support local businesses and expose people to healthy and creative ways of using streets as public space.
It will take place from 1pm to 5pm at Lower Main Road, Observatory & Salt River. (For more information, send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.)
