The girl next door with the special voice – WIN

By Melissa Cohen

During this past week, I caught up with one of Cape Town’s latest vocal sensations, Can Skylark. A causal chat over a steaming cup of coffee was the perfect way to learn more about this girl next door. A constant ‘hum’ was heard as if we were talking over a vocal symphony, but this resonated well with Can and I as we ended up echoing the buzz with our contagious laugher and bubbly conversation, which overpowered the undertone by far. Throughout our interview, Skylark discussed her ‘Trifecta Experience’ album launch’ which is taking place on May 18 and mentioned her excitement towards this new experience. This girl next door has got it all going on with her soulful sound and jovial lyrics.

You have a very unique stage name, where does the name Can Skylark come from?
I have been called ‘Can’ since I can remember. The name Skylark came about when I was performing in a tribute show and the lead singer sang a song about a “fine Skylark”. I then researched this bird and realised that many of the attributes resembled my personality and mannerisms. I then decided that the name was suitable.

One of your singles ‘Everything Is Cool’ poses a question in the first few lines of the song, “So you think you know me, but you only know my name”. With regards to this statement, what should we know about Can Skylark?
I am really just the average girl next door who can sing and wants to send out a positive message through my music to all my fans and the rest of South Africa. I want to be able to make a change in the country and in the lives of many young aspiring musicians. I want people to know that what you see is what you get with me and I am and will remain honest and true to myself and my fans.

Who are your musical inspirations?
I grew up in a musical family. My father is one of my biggest inspirations, as he was a musician and introduced me to various genres that have influenced my style.

Where do you see yourself in the next 20 years?
I really hope I will be performing to much bigger audiences by then. Although pursuing my musical passion is my dream, I want to remain true to myself and my music and I don’t want to be seen as ‘another’ commercial product.

Your debut album is called ‘Pure’, how did this name come about?
Well, I can’t take credit for the name of the album as the graphic design company that worked on the album came up with the name. They listened to my songs and told me that my music has an organic feel with various acoustic sounds; they also mentioned that because the songs didn’t have any computerized sounds in it, the best name for my sound would be pure. I really liked the name and decided to keep it.

Your album launch, ‘The Trifecta Experience’, is on Saturday May 18. What is the aim of the launch?
The launch is there to showcase and launch my album, introduce people to my music video as well as launch the Can Skylark initiative, The Motive, which is there to create a platform for young aspiring musicians to give them the opportunity to showcase their work by providing free studio time, as well as giving them the opportunity to present their work to the public to gain exposure.

Describe your sound in four words.
Acoustic, soulful, authentic, real.

You started out in live theatre shows. Which one has been your favourite one?
My most enjoyable show was at the Roxy Revue Bar at Grandwest in 2008. I was doing a Celine Dion tribute show. Not only did I find this most enjoyable, I also found it the most challenging performance as it was taxing on the voice and I had to suck it up and prepare myself mentally each night. Although this was challenging for me, it was able to widen my vocal range and was able to reassure me that I am capable of doing great things with my voice if I get the challenge. I was thrown in the deep end, but I’m so grateful that I had the opportunity to embrace the talent that I have been given.

What advice would you give other aspiring musicians who have not made their ‘big break’ yet?
Keep pushing and don’t give up, if you are passionate about something and can make a difference then follow your dreams. The love for your talent should allow you to pursue your passion.
