South African movie-goers took advantage of the May 1 public holiday and came out in their droves to take part in one of the biggest film events of the year as Marvel’s ‘Iron Man 3’ opened across the country – so much so, that their support smashed long-standing South African Box-Office records, giving the film the biggest local one-day opening and biggest single day of all time.
The film took in an impressive R4169844, knocking off ‘Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Pt 2’ as the biggest single day in South Africa’s Box Office history. This past weekend, the film opened in select foreign markets and still managed to reach unparalleled heights by taking in a massive US$ 198.4 million – breaking the record previously held by last year’s superhero fest ‘The Avengers’ (US$ 185 million). The film will open in the United States on May 3 and is expected to continue its impressive box office form.
