Denel Honeyball and POPart Theatre will present a sexy 90-minute version of Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’ in May starring a stellar young cast.
The production, to be staged in central Johannesburg, will present an adaptation of Othello which requires only eight actors. This adaptation serves the needs of young audience with shorter attention spans and makes the core story clearer and racier.
One of the motivations for using this adoption and staging it this year is that ‘Othello’ is both an IEB grade 11 Drama set work and a GDE grade 12 English first language set work.
However, with the recent tragedy of the killing of Reeva Steenkamp and so many other violent acts against women the play seems like the right choice speaking as a warning to men to beware of jealousy and not to act rashly.
When director, Denel Honeyball, heard the news about Reeva Steenkamp’s murder, she could not help draw parallels; an admired hero who had overcome the odds to be respected, but perhaps with some deep seated insecurity about his own adequacy. The beautiful heroine that is rumoured to have been unfaithful and her untimely death on a day of romance as Desdemona dies on her wedding sheets.
The world of the story is monochromatic and minimalistic, making the text and the performers create all the magic in this production. The response from teenagers so far has been phenomenal.
* ‘Othello’ is running from May 15 at 19, Wednesday to Saturday at the POPart Theatre on 286 Fox Street, Main Street Life, Maboneng Precinct.
Tickets are R50 for schools and R80 for the public.
