This past weekend, the 48hOURS team went to experience the first permanent market of its kind in Cape Town -The V&A Market On The Wharf. This gastronomic destination opened its doors in December 2012 and has been growing in popularity with visitors discovering the international array of delectable fare, as well as locally manufactured and organic produce.
There is food from across the globe: Transylvanian Hungarian Chimney Cakes; Danish Hot Dogs; Taiwanese Dim Sum ; Malay curries; Gourmet Somoosas; a Pasta Deli, and you will also find local butchers, bakers, and chocolatiers and cheese makers.

Other stalls include Nigiro Tea Merchants offering more than 200 teas from around the world. That’s not all on offer for tea lovers. The world’s trendiest drink Bubble Tea has set up a stall, and this is proving to be a firm favourite amongst old and young. Chocolate lovers will fall in love with Fortain Chocolatier, and Origin Coffee is on hand with their fresh roasted coffee.
That’s not all on offer at this new market. For the youngsters there’s a kid’s entertainment area that is a safe and hygienic place to leave your kids.

For aspiring cooks,South African Master Chef 2012 Runner-Up, Sue-Ann Allen, will be the V&A Market On The Wharf’s very own in-house chef and host at the Demo Kitchen. If you are planning an event or a party, the Demo Kitchen is the venue to book, where guests can relax and be educated and entertained.
There are so many unique aspects to this market. The motto “Sharing Goodness” will see the distribution of waste food to animals in distress, social services programmes for the needy and aid nominated charities that are close to the market’s heart. In line with their motto they’re encouraging volunteers to become involved with any of the market’s social programmes.

Another thing that stood out for me was the drop and go service, which means that you don’t have to carry your shopping bags around all afternoon; you can just drop them off and then collect them on your way out.

The V&A Market on the Wharf is an ideal location to do your weekly shopping. It is open Wednesday to Sunday from 9.30am to 7.30pm and is conveniently situated in Nobel Square between the Two Oceans Aquarium and the V&A Hotel.
