Afrikaans showbiz royalty returns with heart wrenching play

After a brief run at Theatre On The Bay late last year, the heart wrenching mother and son play ‘Voor Ek Vergeet…’ has returned to Cape Town and will be showing for a few nights only at Die Boer Theatre Resrtuarnt in Durbanville until Saturday February 23. Directed by Gert Van Niekerk  and written by Karen Marx, the production stars well known Afrikaans showbiz luminaries Amanda Strydom and Hannes van Wyk.

Hendrien Botha (Amanda Strydom) lives in a little apartment in a retirement village in Johannesburg after having spent her life in Bothaville, but now things are on the verge of changing. Her son Johan (Hannes van Wyk) has arranged that she moves to a single room in the retirement village where she can be better taken care of, especially since she broke her hip not too long ago and is also starting to exhibit signs of dementia. The move is something that caused Hendrien great grief since it means that she has to give up her cosy little flat and the independence it represented in her life.

Despite this development that has caused stress in their relationship, Johan is actually very close to his mother and shares her love of classical music and followed in her footsteps by becoming a music teacher. But he harbours a grim secret that might just stretch their relationship to the breaking point.
‘Voor ek vergeet…’ offers audiences a journey of faith, hope and love that mother and son tackle together. The play is suffused with surprising elements that is sure to have the audience reflecting on their own lives.

Strydom is regarded as one of the premier divas in Afrikaans music and with ‘Voor ek vergeet…’ she has returned to the stage in a dramatic role for the first time in 30 years. “I read the lovely and touching text and I knew immediately that I wanted to play this part,” she says.
“I have yearned for the longest time now to tell a story again as an actress, to become a character again, and this production is just perfect for me.

“The one challenge of the play was to play a mother, which I am not in real life, yet I do understand the complex relationships between mothers and their children.”
Van Wyk is better known to fans as Krynauw in ‘Egoli’ and Len in ‘7de Laan’.
