To keep your skin looking youthful and to maintain a glow, you have to follow the basic four-step skincare regime. The idea is to properly cleanse, exfoliate and moisturise your skin and also to apply a sunscreen. You have to know your skin type before you purchase any product; whether it is oily, normal/combination, dry, sensitive or sun-damaged.

Step 1 – Cleansing
A simple cleanser is needed to clean the skin but avoid soaps as they tend to dry the skin. A creamy cleanser is best for dry skins and a clear cleanser for oily skins. Do not over cleanse your skin as this leads to the natural oils being washed off. Make sure that all makeup is removed before going to bed as this clogs the pores. The area around the eyes is very delicate so do not use harsh products to remove makeup, but a simple product like baby oil does wonders. If you have dry skin, a cold cream like Pond’s is suitable. Just apply and tissue and then apply your moisturiser. Washing your face with too hot water can cause broken capillaries, so a mild cleanser is all you need.

Step 2 – Exfoliate
This can be done once a week.  Make sure that the product is not too harsh or rough on the skin.  All you want is to remove excess dead cells and to clean the pores.  The trick here is to apply your exfoliating cream onto a damp face cloth or your finger tips and with circular motion gently massage the skin. Never apply too much pressure as this could bruise your skin.  Always choose a gentle scrub with tiny grains.   Rinse off all the grains thoroughly before applying a toner. Toners are meant to remove all remaining traces of oil, makeup and dirt.   I personally do not like a toner since most of them have alcohol and are often the cause of drying the skin.  However if you like the way your skin feels with a toner then use it and enjoy it.

Step 3 – Moisturise
I truly believe in a good moisturiser. When your skin is tight, it needs extra moisture so a basic vitamin E cream is excellent for dry skin. Be careful not to use too much though, as this can cause clogged pores. A simple method is to apply your moisturiser with your finger tips and gently massage around your face. Special eye creams are necessary as the skin around the eye is very thin and susceptible to wrinkles. Pat your eye cream gently around your eye with your index finger.

Step 4 – Apply Sunscreen
As we know the number one cause of wrinkles is sun damage, so it is important to apply a sunscreen of at least SPF30. My favourite is the Neutrogena range as it contains helioplex which protects the skin from the harsh sun rays.
This is just my 4-step basic routine everyday for a clear, natural and radiant looking skin.
