Like men, not all wines are created equal, but every so often an inspirational man makes magic in the cellar and creates a wine that resembles his spirit completely. Such a man is Allan Mullins and if you taste the two wines that carry his name, you will understand my musings!
Allan is one of the most loved and respected wine personalities in South Africa. A Cape Wine Master, wine judge, author, wine lecturer and inspirational speaker, but above all, a mensch, Allan has been blending wine for Woolworths for the past 22 years and earlier this year he was named one of the “living legends of wine” at the Veritas Awards, widely regarded as the “Oscars” of the South African wine industry. He has a generous spirit and is undoubtedly one of the most positive people I have ever met, despite his partial paralysis due to a spinal injury during a diving accident in his early twenties.
When Allan joined Woolworths in 1990, he was given the responsibility for selecting and blending their wines as well as conceptualising the packaging, planning and coordinating the wine portfolios and developing new products. Woolworths encouraged him to blend his wine duo which is called My Song White 2011, a sophisticated blend of 25% wooded Semillon, 25% unwooded Semillon and 50% Sauvignon Blanc. and My Song Red 2009, a seamless blend of 50% Merlot, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Cabernet Franc.
The red was blended at Spier, where winemaker Frans Smit gave Allan a choice of his very best barrels and left him to “play”. My Song White was blended at Reynecke Wines, utilising Johan Reyneke’s Sauvignon Blancs and incorporating some of Duncan Savage’s Cape Point Vineyards Semillon.
The My Song range will be sold at selected Woolworths stores in very limited quantities. The My Song White is selling at R169.95 and My Song Red at R199.95.
Allan continues to live out his passion and love for wine at Woolworths, consulting on the blending and selecting of wines as well as being the Ambassador for the Woolworths wine collection. Cheers to this man amongst men.
