Cape Town City Ballet visits Durban with ‘Coppelia’

Cape Town City Ballet, in a rare visit to Durban, is presenting ‘Coppelia’ – a beautiful festive comic ballet for the whole family performed to live music with the KZNPO, at the Playhouse Opera for a short season until Sunday November 25.

‘Coppelia’ is based on the much loved comic fable by ETA Hoffman, and is light-hearted ballet at its best. The ballet incorporates romance, intrigue and deception, transporting audiences to a world of fairytale magic and happy endings.

A mysterious inventor, Doctor Coppélius, has made a dancing living doll. It is so lifelike that Franz, a hot-blooeded village swain, is infatuated with it, and sets aside his true heart’s desire, the lovely but jealous Swanilda,  in favour of the mannequin. Swanilda though, is not to be jilted, and together with some mischevious maidens, does scheming of her own by showing him his folly in dressing as the doll and pretending to come to life.
