After the incredible success of the ‘80’s Rewind Festival’ earlier this year in Durban, where a 20000-strong crowd partied to the best 1980s show this country has ever seen, Capetonian music fans with nostalgia for that era can look forward to their own concert featuring some of the most popular acts from two decades ago.
The likes of Rick Astley, Belinda Carlisle, ABC, Nik Kershaw, Tony Hadley from Spandau Ballet and Imagination featuring Leee John will light up the Grand Arena at GrandWest Casino on October 31.
So strong has the response been from locals that producers Virgin Atlantic have added an extra show for November 1.
The ‘80’s Rewind Festival’ held annually in London is the biggest 80’s festival in the world. Local fans can look forward to seven top international artists that will play over 40 hits that are sure to have audiences singing and dancing along to some of the best hits of two decades ago.
Astley holds the Guiness Book of World Records for being the first male solo artist to have his first eight singles reach the Top 10 in the UK, an achievement that has to still be beaten. In 2007 an Internet phenomenon was born, known as ‘Rickrolling’, which occurred when you clicked on a link that is expected to take you to a particular site or page, and instead end up at a video of ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ video. The artist has sold over 45 million Records and among his other hits there was ‘Whenever You Need Somebody’, to name but a few.
Tony Hadley sold over 23 million albums as part of Spandau Ballet, with hits like ‘True’, ‘Gold’ and ‘Through the Barricades’. Carlisle is Ranked #76 on VH1’s Greatest Women of Rock N Roll. The Go Go’s were one of the most successful all-girl bands of all time, selling over seven million records. In August 2011 Carlisle was given a star on the Hollywood walk of fame.
