The Department of Performing Arts (Musical Theatre) at the Tshwane University of Technology will open its Spring season with the Broadway hit musical ‘Sarafina!’ at the Breytenbach Theatre from October 11 to 20 at 8pm nightly.
Originally composed, written, directed, choreographed and produced by award-winning playwright Mbongeni Ngema, ‘Sarafina!’ has achieved international acclaim since its debut in the 1990s.
The play is set at Morris Isaacson High School in Soweto, where in 1976 students assembled to protest against Afrikaans as the only medium of instruction. Through narrative, song and dance, ‘Sarafina!’ follows the activities of a fictional class and, in particular, one girl named Sarafina, who inspired her classmates with her commitment to the struggle against apartheid.
“This musical represents the history of our future,” says the director of the show, Josias Dos Moleele. “The production promises to explore themes of determination, perseverance and courage against tremendous odds. Although ‘Sarafina!’ is deeply steeped in history, it refrains from becoming a glorified history lesson. It is a moving drama of joy and pain performed with a surprising amount of humour by an all-mixed race cast of gifted musicians, actors and dancers.”
* There will also be matinee performances on October 13 and 20 at 3pm and on October 16 and 18 at 4pm.
