Ster-Kinekor Cinema Nouveau Cavendish is thrilled to announce the screening of their very own South African title – ‘Lucky’ – releasing on July 20 at the long established art house cinema in Claremont. Cinema Nouveau Cavendish Square has it all – offering audiences a unique experience in foreign films and alternate content, from live productions to cinematic gems from across the globe.
Written and directed by Avie Luthra, ‘Lucky’ features an all-star South African cast with performances from James Ngcobo, Vusi Kunene, Brenda Ngxoli, Mary Twala, Mduduzi Mabaso and Jabu Tshabalala. ‘Lucky’ was featured at the Toronto Film Festival, Palm Springs International Film Festival, Santa Barbara International Film Festival and Busan International Film Festival. The movie was also a winner at the London Asian Film Festival for Best Crossover Film, Best Actress at Abu Dhabi International Film Festival, Best International Film at Bengaluru International Film Festival and Special Mention at the local Cape Winelands International Film festival.
Driven by his dream of going to school and making something of himself, Lucky (Sihle Dlamini) leaves the familiarity of his Zulu village to go to the big city. He tries to stay with an uncle who has no use for him, and ends up falling in love with an elderly woman called Padma (Jayashree Basavra) who has a pathological fear of Africans.
She however takes Lucky in as she would a “stray” and together they develop an unlikely bond, which leads to a potentially promising and unexpected future. Through an odyssey marked by greed, violence, and ultimately, belonging, ‘Lucky’ shows how a child’s spirit can bring out decency, humility and even love in adults struggling to survive in the new South Africa.
