Canal Walk Theatre returns with ‘The Little Mermaid’

One of the world’s best loved fairy tales, ‘The Little Mermaid’, will première at the Canal Walk Theatre in the shopping centre’s Central Court this winter in a new family musical by award winning duo Fred Abrahamse and Marcel Meyer.

Based on the classic tale by the Hans Christian Andersen, the show, which will run from Saturday June 23 to Sunday July 15, will be brought to life on stage with unique sets, full costuming and puppets as well as memorable songs.  This production of ‘The Little Mermaid’ will showcase some of South Africa’s finest musical theatre talents.

Fleur du Cap award winning actress Jenny Stead will star as the Little Mermaid, with Stephen Jubber as the Prince. Stead has won accolades for her performances in plays by Shakespeare, Reza de Wet and Steven Berkoff. Jubber most recently starred as the romantic lead in ‘Mamma Mia!’ Earl Gregory, who will also feature, won the Naledi Award as Best Newcomer and played the title role in Pieter Toerien’s production of ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’, as well as the Rum Tum Tugger in the International Touring Production of ‘Cats’.

Candice van Litesenborgh, who plays the Sea Witch, is another top musical theatre talent. She has been seen as Emma Goldman in the award winning South African premiere of Sondheim’s ‘Assassins’, as well as being featured in a string of musicals like ‘Evita’, ‘Chess’ and ‘JC Superstar’. Niall Griffin has appeared in several local musicals like ‘Disney’s Beauty and the Beast’ and received rave reviews in Johannesburg for his recent performance in Jason Robert Brown’s acclaimed musical, ‘The Last Five Years’.

Now in its twelfth year, the annual Canal Walk Theatre is recognised as one of the finest children’s theatre productions in the country. “Over 250,000 children have had their first experience of the magic of live theatre at one of our performances,” says Canal Walk Shopping Centre Marketing Manager Camilla Lor.
