This Friday is a chance to see one of Cape Town’s most popular bands in action, namely MacStanley. Best known these days for their involvement with the annual Symphonic Rocks Concerts spearheaded by their lead singer Andy Mac, MacStanley will soon release a full length third album and fans can expect to hear snippets from it on the night as well as indulge in a listen of all their favourites.
The gig takes place at Rhapsody’s in Green Point (83 main Road) around 9pm, with free entrance.
Another free treat for music fans and bussing musicians alike this weekend is the Big Time Masterclass at the Artscape Theatre Centre (DF Malan Street, Foreshore): a cross-cultural music exchange between South Africa and France that kicked off on June 11 with a series of rehearsals and master classes open to the public.
This Friday the event culminates in the Big Time! Orchestra debut performance as part of the theatre 2012 youth day.
Master classes to look out for over the weekend include a rhythm section class with George Werner from the Little Giants on Saturday at 9.30am. For more information on the schedule of events, visit www.artscape.co.za or call 021 410 9838.
Jazz fans can soak up the magic of some of Cape Town’s finest jazz cats as the Jason Reolon trio featuring Jonno Sweetman (drums), Dan Shout (saxophone) and Romy Brauteseth (bass) perform at The Mahogany Room (79 Buitenkant Street, Gardens) on both Friday and Saturday night this week.
Reolon has a solid reputation as one of our finest jazz pianists through his solo performances and association with groups such as Breakfast Included, Restless Natives and the Outline Trio. This weekend’s performances follow his recent concerts at the 2012 Cape Town international Jazz festival, and will precede a run at this year’s National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.
There are two shows every night, one starting at 8pm and another at 10pm. Tickets are R60pp for one show, and R100pp for both, sold at the door. For more information call 076 679 2697.
