FILM: What To Expect When You’re Expecting
Inspired by the perennial New York Times bestseller of the same name, ‘What To Expect When You’re Expecting’ is a heartfelt big screen comedy about five couples whose intertwined lives are turned upside down by the challenges of impending parenthood.
Over the moon about starting a family, TV fitness guru Jules (Cameron Diaz) and dance show star Evan (Matthew Morrison) find that their high-octane celebrity lives don’t stand a chance against the surprise demands of pregnancy.
Baby-crazy author and advocate Wendy (Elizabeth Banks) gets a taste of her own militant mommy advice when pregnancy hormones ravage her body; while Wendy’s husband, Gary (Ben Falcone), struggles not to be outdone by his competitive alpha-Dad, who’s expecting twins with his much younger trophy wife, Skyler (Brooklyn Decker). Photographer Holly (Jennifer Lopez) is prepared to travel the globe to adopt a child, but her husband Alex (Rodrigo Santoro) isn’t so sure, and tries to quiet his panic by attending a “dudes” support group, where new fathers get to tell it like it really is.
And rival food truck chefs Rosie (Anna Kendrick) and Marco’s (Chace Crawford) surprise hook-up results in an unexpected quandary: what to do when your first child comes before your fist date?
A kaleidoscopic comedy that aims for universality and unpredictability, ‘What To Expect When You’re Expecting’ seeks humour and uplift in all the unexpected trials and triumphs of welcoming a child into the world.
Since its first publication in 1985, ‘What to Expect When You’re Expecting’ has become a modern standard and the definitive bible for expectant parents. The perennial New York Times bestseller, authored by Heidi Murkoff, was named one of USA Today’s 25 most influential books of the past 25 years and is now the first book in a series that has sold 35 million copies worldwide.
“I think it’s very, very clever, this movie concept based on the book,” says Diaz, who plays one of five expectant mothers in the ensemble comedy. “I’ve always heard the title being talked about.
It’s one of those books that have been around and a part of almost everyone’s life. When you read it, it feels like you’re getting advice from your best friend who’s been through it all.”
