Legendary SA author’s life as a school teacher comes alive on stage

The life of literary genius Herman Charles Bosman as a school teacher in the Groot Marico Bushveld is explored in ‘A Teacher in the Bushveld’, at the Baxter Golden Arrow Studio for two weeks only from June 18 to July 3 at 7pm nightly. Based on Bosman’s own writing, the one-hander is adapted and directed by Nicky Rebelo and stars David Butler.

Since this one-man show first premiered at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in 2009, it has received great media acclaim, with Beeld raving, “Butler brilliantly brings Bosman to new audiences.”
Director Rebelo recently relocated to Cape Town from Johannesburg with his wife, the award-winning actress Jennifer Steyn. He edited the final chapter of James Joyce’s novel ‘Ulysses’ to create the one-woman show ‘Molly Bloom’, which he also directed, and which was staged at the Baxter in 2010, earning Steyn a Fleur du Cap best actress nomination for her portrayal.
He is well-known for his many stage and television performances and has also written for television.
Following the success of ‘A Touch of Madness’, which explores the life of Bosman as a creative genius and which has been performed in theatres across the country since 1999, the same team once again collaborates to bring this poignant and humorous story, ‘A Teacher in the Bushveld’.
