Cape Town’s finest will have your taste buds rejoicing

Next weekend is one of the highlights on my Cape Town Calendar. It’s the Pick n Pay Taste of Cape Town festival in association with Orbit Chewing Gum, and this year the event is celebrating its 5th birthday.Last year was the first year I attended Taste in Cape Town and my taste buds were blown away. This year promises to be no different. This gourmet event allows the public to taste or nibble their way around fourteen of the city’s top restaurants at each Taste session.

The idea is quite clever: Cape Town’s finest chefs line up to proudly show off their signature dishes, and all you have to do is to sample the best cuisine that Cape Town has to offer, whilst enjoying South African wines. What stood out for me about this festival last year was the environmentally aware aspect and this year Taste has partnered with green companies such as Green Home and Interwaste in order to ensure a more sustainable event. Recycle bins will be placed strategically around the festival and biodegradable cutlery will be used.

The impressive list of restaurants and their world class chefs guarantee that there will be something delightful for every palate. I’ve had the honour of cooking alongside some of these chefs on ‘Expresso’ on SABC3 and they’ve taught me some amazing dishes. The chefs I’ve worked with who will be at taste include Bistro Sixteen82 Executive chef Brad Ball; Planet Bar & Restaurant Executive chef Rudi Liebenberg and Signal Restaurant at Cape Grace Executive chef Malika Van Reenen.

There is also the Pick n Pay Fresh Living Chefs Theatre where you can catch Cape Town’s top chefs in action with fun and informative cooking demonstrations as well as watch them take on culinary challenges.

At Taste you can also appreciate the city’s local food heroes at The Small Producers Market, where you will find delicious hand-made jams; sweets; cheeses, pestos, as well as my favourite brownie stall Yummi Brownies, which I discovered at the Stellenbosch Slow market. They make the most delicious chocolate brownies, or try out the gorgeous cupcakes from Queen of Tarts!

And for the youngsters there’s the KidzZone hosted by Party Tots on Saturday and Sunday April 21 and 22.Your taste buds will be treated to a five star experience at this year’s Taste of Cape Town at the Green Point Cricket Oval from Thursday April 19 to Sunday April 22.
