Van Loveren – serious bang for your buck

By Nicolette Waterford

Van Loveren is no newcomer to wine lovers who want bang for their buck. They are probably best known for their Four Cousins wine range, one of the biggest selling wine brands in South Africa.

This family run winery is situated on the R317 road between Robertson and Bonnievale and they recently became the first wine producer to release a wine from the 2012 vintage – the Van Loveren Sauvignon Blanc. I loved the crisp freshness of this wine and for a mere R38 per bottle it put a smile on my face; the fact that it is available from most supermarkets will make it an easy find. Try it with a tomato based pasta or white meat dishes like grilled fish and chicken.

The Van Loveren wine offerings are extensive and they produce everything from a low alcohol wine to a Marula fruit cream, an elegant brandy and refreshing grape juice. Also on offer is a selection of speciality products in bigger bottles, starting with the more modest 3 Litre Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz at R320 per bottle leading up to the 18 litre big brother version for R 2300.

A visit to the tasting room and recently opened bistro, Christina’s @ Van Loveren, is a treat. Christina’s serve some of the best thin-crust wood-fired pizzas and gourmet burgers on the other side of the tunnel and as an added bonus, they offer free Wi-Fi! Tastings for most of the wines are free, but a R5 tasting fee apply when you taste the Methode Cap Classique (bottle fermented) Sparkling Wine, Noble Late Harvest, Five Year pot still Brandy and Marula Fruit Cream. Van Loveren also offers a door to door delivery service when you offer from them directly, so you have no excuse to ever run out of your favourite Van Loveren product.

Tasting room hours: Mon-Fri: 8.30am to 5pm; Sat 9.30am to 3pm; Sun 11am to 2pm. Call 023 615 1505 for more details.

Christina’s: Tue-Sat 11am to 5pm; Sun 11.30am-5pm (last orders 3.30pm) – bookings: christinas@vanloveren.co.za
