This weekend sees the return of the Cape International Jazz Festival to the CTICC (Cape Town International Convention Centre, 1 Lower Long Street). In its 13th year the festival has become an absolute musical institution and holds an international ranking of 4th best music festival, outshining events such as Switzerland’s Montreaux festival and the North Sea Jazz festival in Holland.
This year’s line-up promises to be as impressive as ever. For those new to the festival, it is a musical display of over 40 international and local artists on five different stages, over Friday and Saturday. Tickets are R550pp for a weekend pass, and R400pp for a day pass with entrance into the Rosies Theatre costing an extra R30pp per performance. All available via Computicket.
Here are some highlights of the festival that will have you spoilt for choice: on Friday don’t miss new afro folk/pop singing/song-writing sensation Zahara at 6pm on Kippies, or vocal diva Lindiwe Suttle on the Basil Coetzee stage at 8pm. Rosies stage at 7.30pm features international jazz singer and her trio Patti Austin, while the Moses Molelekwa stage features the renowned local Jason Reolon Trio, Outline, at 9:15pm.
On Saturday music to look out for includes The Moreira Project on Kippies at 10pm; Brubeck plays on the Rosies stage at 9pm; local guitar favourite Steve Dyer will be on at 7pm at Moses Molelekwa; followed by Victor Khula at 10pm and also Hip Hop Pantsula at 8pm on the Bassline stage.
Also this weekend Friday, if you’re skipping the fest, why not catch one of the hottest bands in SA right now, Goodluck, at Living Room in Bellville (021 865 8200) for a night of celebration from 9pm. Goodluck have been making waves in the industry with their brand of electro swing that aspires to uplift the listener and energise crowds ever since their first 2010/2011 summer hit ‘Taking it Easy’ hit the SA top 40 charts.
They have also recently achieved some international success in New York and The Netherlands and have now joined up with JC Le Roux on their new single ‘Le Good Life’. Friday’s concert will be in support of their new album ‘Without Hesitation’ that features the single, and will also feature fellow musicians Tony Paco and Jason Stoffberg, amongst others.
