Tomfoolery, hijinks and “Monki Punk”
By Claudia Mohr
If you’re in the mood for something a little on the funky side this weekend join in on the fancy dress and musical mayhem of the Flam Jangled Tea Party music festival running Friday to Sunday at Contermanskloof Estate (Exit 22 off N7, Right towards Durbanville, At T-Junction turn left). The idea is to create an atmosphere of tomfoolery over the weekend against which a cultural and musical clash between swinging jazz, rock ‘n roll, salsa, honky-tonk, dubby-house and pretty much anything that grooves will take place.
Performers include Hotwater, Jeremy Loops, Nomadic Orchestra, Peachy Keen, Two Minute Puzzle, Black South Easter, The Sneaky Possums, James Copeland, Legoloop and many, many more. Saturday night will feature ‘Charleston’ dance lessons with Boogie Back Dance Co. The festival also boasts various venues such as The Night Owl Haunt, The Out of Site Cafe and The Little Market Theatre Stage. Dressing up is encouraged! Tickets to this mad hatter like party cum music smash are R340pp, available online at www.webtickets.co.za. Call: 021 7944 032 for more info.
Zula Sound Bar (196 Long Street) is also offering up a dose of music mayhem on Saturday night as eclectic front man Chris Chameleon leads his band Boo! onto stage from 10pm onwards. Boo! have been on the local music scene since late 1997 with their highly original brand of punk rock that they dub “Monki Punk”. Their humorous take on the punk band genre is slightly more advanced as it represents a sound that deviates from the standard bass, drums, guitar combo to include keyboard and brass samples.
Chameleon is known for his charismatic performances, and Saturday’s show should include some of his most beloved hijinks, such as outlandish outfits featuring pink tights and his personal brand of vocal alchemy. Cover is R60: 021 424 2442. Afrikaans music fans who love Kurt Darren can catch their idol in top form at the Grand West Casino Grand Arena (1 Vanguard Drive, Goodwood) on Sunday night.
He is set to entertain audiences with musical treats from his 14 solo albums that will no doubt include hits such as ‘Meisie Meisie’, ‘Staan op’, ‘Alleen’, ‘Hemel op Tafelberg’ and ‘Se Net Ja’. Many of these songs have been translated for Europeon audiences in Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany. 36 of his songs have gone platinum locally and Darren has over the years collected a legion of loyal fans and followers. He will be accompanied by a five piece orchestra and a set of personal dancers for this platinum tour. Tickets are between R80 and R140pp, available through Computicket: www.computicket.com.
On Sunday let loose your inner rocker and join award winning bands AKing and Van Coke Kartel in the Conert In The Field, Herzlia Constantia (Old Kendal Road, Constantia). They will be joined by indie group Machineri, one of the absolute best live acts of their kind in SA, fronted by earthy soul singer Sadie Fox. Other bands include ska outfit Lancaster Band, and Balkanology’s DJ Maorginal. There will be food stalls and an opportunity to win a helicopter ride over our most beautiful Mother City. Tickets are R65pp available through Computicket. Call 021 715 3014 for more info. Music starts round 3pm.
