Music and art to “lift” spirits of Cavendish shoppers

Cavendish Square has some special surprises in store for anyone planning to visit the Centre during the coming weeks. Visitors recently saw the internationally renowned mural artist Mak1One at work, creating a mural artwork live in the Centre.

Mak1One’s mural measures an impressive 1.5m by 6m on the Ground Floor, near Truworths. His artwork forms part of the Cavendish Square Lifted project.Cavendish Square has always been at the forefront of green initiatives and as the centre is in the process of upgrading to energy efficient escalators, the hoarding around these escalators has been being used as a platform to showcase innovative green design by local design talents and local school pupils. The initiative aims to ‘lift’ customers’ perceptions about recyclable waste, as well as how waste can be used to create art.

Mak1One; who was commissioned by Visi magazine to carry out this work at Cavendish, has been involved in mural art for over twenty years and his mural at Cavendish also states the support of Cavendish and Visi for World Design Capital 2014.The Cavendish Square Lifted project artwork, which includes designs by Heath Nash, Mak1One, Keri Muller and Isabeau Joubert, with the support of around 160 local scholars, will be on display in the centre until mid May.

Also in the support of Lifted, The Cape Philharmonic Orchestra’s Brass Quintet will perform on the First Floor at 12 noon on Saturday March 17. Cavendish Square has formed a partnership with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and the Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra to show the Centre’s continued commitment to supporting local arts and culture. The orchestras will perform a series of concerts on the Lower Ground Level.

The programme for the rest of the performances, which will all take place at 12 noon is:

  • 31 March: Cape Philharmonic Orchestra – Brass Quintet
  • 7 April: Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra – Sax Ensemble and String Quartet
  • 14 April: Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra – Sax Ensemble and String Quartet
