Cycling for change
Imagine cycling from Sun City to Cape Town, a distance of over 1800km. Well that’s exactly what a group of cyclists did.
The Charity Cycling Club hosts the annual Charity Cycle Tour from the Sun City Resort to Table Bay Hotel in Cape Town to raise funds for various Children’s Charity Organisations en-route.I met up with them recently as they arrived in Cape Town at the V&A Waterfront. The group was all smiles and looked very relaxed after the distance they cycled. It was a diverse mix of some 40 cyclists, local and international, that covered this distance in eight days and then participated in the prestigious Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour thereafter.
It’s amazing to see the difference a group of cyclists can make in the communities along the way. I had the honour of cycling the final distance with them and they were all smiles and received a very warm reception from the Management and Staff at Table Bay Hotel. This team arrived in Cape Town last Tuesday, just in time to relax for two days before The Cycle Tour.
Once again The Cycle Tour proved to be a well organised event with over 36 000 cyclists taking part. I took part on a bicycle with a difference, the Pick’nPay Like Bike which was powered by social media. And for every 1000 likes I received on the LikeBike Facebook page, Pick n Pay donated a bicycle to Velokhaya Cycling Academy. At the end of The Cycle Tour on Sunday, we had raised 20 bicycles with your support.
The cycle tour is an amazing event for Cape Town, as it not only gets visitors to our Mother City, but because most of these cyclists do the race for charity. It’s amazing to see the difference everyone makes for their community. Now the next big sporting event to hit Cape Town takes place next month: The Two Oceans Marathon. Let me know via twitter @liezelv if you’ll be taking part in this event.
