This Week’s Music Musts!
By Claudia Mohr
Afrikaans rockers Die Heuwels Fantasties will be performing at the Rhebokskloof Summer Concert Series on Friday (Rhebokskloof Theatre, Rhebokskloof wine estate, Paarl Road, Paarl). One of the ever popular outdoor concert series this summer, Rhebokskloof’s Theatre on the Lake is the perfect place for Fantasties fans to soak up songs like ‘In En Uit’, ‘Modus Opernadi’ and ‘Buitenste Ruim’ off their newest album ‘Wilder as die Wildtuin’. Have a little rock and roll outdoor fun! Show starts at 7pm but the gates open at 5pm already, and tickets are R120pp available through www.computicket.com. Visit www.rhebokskloof.co.za for more info.
Also a musical idea worth considering this Friday is a performance by long time musical partnership Albert Frost and Arno Castens at Die Boer Theatre Restaurant in Durbanville. Both veterans of SA original rock music that cemented their star status with a hardcore touring schedule over the years, these two hard core rockers are set to entertain in a showcase of not only their music but also their various musical abilities.
This venue is the perfect place to catch a show like this, as it is intimate and cosy, and has an undeniable charm to it. The show on Friday stats at 8.30pm, but go earlier and enjoy the home style food on offer. Tickets are R150pp and booking is essential: 021 979 1911.
Looking for a little something out of the ordinary? Want to stretch your musical horizons? Drop by the brand new inner city live music venue The Mahogany Room (79 Buitenkant street, Gardens) this weekend and catch the Edge of Wrong Music Festival. The festival has grown in popularity over the years and is a joint effort between local South African musicians and visiting Norwegian musos.
The idea of the festival is to create an open platform for a high level of musical excellence and exploration through unusual collaborations and improvisation. On Friday catch SA drummer Andre Swartz, in a challenge to push his artistic boundaries, and mixed sampling duo from Switzerland, /morFrom/, as they fuse field recordings and electronica with improvised music on a variety of instruments, such as the guitar and organ. Tickets are R80pp and music starts at 7pm. Call 076 679 2697 of more info.
On Saturday, another interesting choice for your weekend music fix will take place at 6 Spin Street, CBD; join in on the celebration of the work of artist Storm Thorgerson in an exhibition of his very best album art.
The evening’s entertainment will feature Cape Town band Machineri – Sanie Fox (guitar/vocals), Andre Geldenhuys (guitars) and Daniel Huxham (drums) – known for their gritty sound predominantly rooted in blues rock. Thorgenson is responsible for their self titled debut album cover art, which will be on display. Tickets are R40pp, and music starts around 10pm: 021 461 0666.
