College of Magic to host SA Magic Championships

College of Magic to host SA Magic Championships

The College of Magic, the only magical arts organisation of its kind in the world, will host the 2012 South African Championships of Magic at the Artscape Theatre from March 2 to 4.

The SA Championships is a triennial event held to select the best magician nationwide. This year’s highly anticipated competition will see wand-wielding titans compete for the honour to represent Africa at FISM, the World Championships of Magic, in England in July.

Set to transform the Artscape Theatre into a mystical battleground, the three day long Championships will feature a programme of events including lectures by leading world-renowned illusionists, the exhilarating Close-Up and Stage contests, a Children’s Magic Spectacular and the not-to-be-missed Stars of Comedy and Magic, a gala show featuring the crème de la crème of local comedians, performers and magicians.

The line-up for the South African Magic Championships includes:

  • The Children’s Magic Spectacular at the Artscape Theatre on Saturday March 3: The College of Magic’s talented members will enthrall young audiences with a whirlwind of magical entertainment.
  • For the adults, the Stars of Comedy and Magic at the Artscape Theatre on Sunday March 4: Top comedians Alan Committie, Riaad Moosa and Stuart Taylor will feature, as well as SA’s top ventriloquist Conrad Koch, special international guest star Wayne Houchin – direct from the USA, not to mention a variety of specialty acts at this one night only fundraising gala event for the College of Magic’s Community Outreach Programmes.

The College of Magic, based in Cape Town, has been training children and adults in the art of magic and illusion for more than 30 years. “The SA Magic Championships gives us an opportunity to prove our standing in the international performance community, confirming that Africa has a wealth of outstanding talent able to hold their own not only locally, but internationally,” says artistic coordinator Chad Findlay.

Wayne Houchin is a trailblazing illusionist with many accolades up his sleeve. Known for his mind blowing magical acts, including  escaping from a regulation straitjacket while hanging upside-down 50 feet in the air over a blocked off intersection packed with thousands of people and accurately predicting the outcome of the American football match Super Bowl XXXVI , Houchin recently stunned  the Dominican Republic by stopping time for the entire nation – on live television.
